Non-Rectangular Flags
Exactly one sovereign country in the world flies a national flag that is not a rectangle, and that fact alone makes Nepal's flag one of the most frequently misidentified images in any flag quiz — most people assume a country simply chose an unusual shape as a design flourish, when the real explanation is closer to the opposite: the shape came first, out of a specific 19th-century heraldic tradition, and the country built its national identity around a design element rather than retrofitting a shape onto a pre-decided rectangle.
Nepal's flag is formed of two stacked pennants — a smaller triangular pennant on top of a larger one — a shape directly descended from a Nepalese royal and military tradition of separate triangular pennons flown by rival branches of the ruling family, later merged into a single flag when the country's various principalities unified under the Shah dynasty in the 18th century.
